Great Tips for Taking Family Road Trips

Road trips are fun, but many parents find it a nightmare traveling with toddlers in the back seat of their cars. The the only thing that is needed is adequate preparedness, and you can take the trip with the young children. Actually, if you can plan it correctly, you might even have fun.

Plan on the Route to Take
Satellite navigation makes life easier because they help people to find their way but modern technology has its setbacks, and there are numerous horror stories of GPS devices leading people dangerously off-course. Take a GPS device to assist you to track your route, but if you don’t have one, you can use an online route planner.

An online route planner is quite useful if you want to visit different areas. If you are traveling with young children, it is wise that you plan multiple stops along the way, so that they can stretch their legs, get something to eat, and also use the toilet.

You can plan stopovers after every couple hours. Look at your route and see whether there are any interesting places to visit along the way. You can consider child-friendly attraction sites, famous landmarks, or anywhere of interest. To keep your kids less bored during your road trip, try making the journey as interesting as possible.

Entertainment
Be sure to take toys, handled electronic devices like iPads and game consoles, DVDs and anything else that your child enjoys. Do not forget to pack their favorite cuddly toy and a blanket to use when they are ready to take a nap. It is okay to bring coloring books and crayons for older children.

Have a Plan for Food and Drinks
Long road trips are boring, so do not be surprised if your children drink and eat more than usual. Snacks and drinks can help in relieving the tedium; pack some fruits, biscuits, potato chips and sandwiches. Bring along diluted fruit juice in sip bottles and cups and if the weather is warm, carry a large bottle of water. You can buy extra snacks along the way, but it is good to take food and drink enough for the trip just in case you don’t find a good place to eat along the way.

Plan for the Unexpected
When traveling with kids, be ready for the unexpected. You can carry a change of clothes in the event of accidents or illness and some bags for the soiled clothing. You can include a packet of wet wipes to clean the kids and the car, and for the smaller kids, take some disposable diapers and a travel potty.

Whining kids are annoying, but losing your temper won’t better the situation; keep smiling no matter what.
